How many hours do I need for ground school?

Transport Canada requires 40 hours for Private Pilot and 80 hours for Commercial Pilot ground school. However, most students spend more time studying — around 100 hours for PPL and 130 hours for CPL — especially when preparing for the written exam.

How are ground school hours counted?

We track your quiz completions to determine how much material you've covered. Unlike simply logging hours watching videos, quizzes confirm you’re actively learning.

How do I retake a quiz to get 100%?

Finish the quiz, click Submit, then restart it. You can reattempt as needed — the system keeps your highest score.

Do I have to complete and pass all the quizzes?

Yes. You must complete all quizzes and correct them to 100%. This confirms you've learned the required material and helps track your ground school progress.

Do I need to watch all the videos?

Not necessarily. As long as you can get 100% on the quizzes, you're good. Everyone learns differently — some prefer videos, others presentations or reading reference manuals. Use the method that suits you best.

How should I go through the course material?

If you're new to aviation, start by watching the videos and reviewing the presentations. If you're already familiar, the presentations may be enough. If you're confident, jump straight into the quizzes. If you struggle with a quiz, go back to the videos and presentations to review.

Do I need to follow a specific order when taking the courses?

The courses are laid out in a recommended order (top to bottom), but you're free to complete them in whatever sequence works best for you. The key is to understand the material well enough to pass the quizzes.

What course should I start with?

Start with the Air Exercises course — it gives you the foundation for flight lessons and the flight test. Then move on to PSTAR (Pre-Solo Air Regulations), the Radio Licence course, and finally the Private Pilot Ground School. These courses build on each other and are essential if you're beginning in airplane flight training.

How do I get a recommendation letter for the Transport Canada exam?

To get a letter, complete all quizzes and achieve at least 75% average on three practice exams. Fill out the form at least 48 hours before your exam date. Your course access must still be active, and your practice exams should be recent (within the last two weeks).

What if I need more time or don’t pass the Transport Canada exam?

If your course access expires, visit the course renewal page — your progress is saved for one year. If you don’t pass the exam, we’ll help you come up with a study plan and offer tutoring. After two weeks, you can retake the exam.

When can I start?

Using the self lead courses you can start any time. If it's instructor lead, then it's at the specific time the next instructor lead course starts.

What is a online ground school all about?

There are two parts to learning to fly, the flying and ground school. Pilots and student pilots will cross oceans for flying. Ground School is always a pain. It’s never at the right time, right place, or with the right instructor. The online ground school is designed to change that.

We created the online ground school to serve a need. Flight schools always have a hard time filling a ground school due to different schedules of students. The online ground school allows flexibility. The online ground school is also designed for students who are planning an intensive training course, allowing students to prepare before they commence flight training.

What is an “Online Ground School”

The online ground school is a guided self study program with the added benefit of communicating with your fellow students via forums online. Study when you want, where you want (any internet connection), and how you want. The ground school prepares you for the written exam and background knowledge all pilots need to have. Student have electronic access to a instructor via email and discussion forums. A true online ground school is not simply practice questions online. Our system uses presentations (many with sound and video), videos of actual ground school and in flight sessions, quizzes, text books, assignments, and discussions in the forum.

Why should I use your online ground school?

Nobody else comes close to having a complete system for online ground school. A system that gives you the letters you need for Transport Canada (recommendation and record), comprehensive videos, presentations, practice questions, and help in the forums. Our material is well proven, having thousands of students complete our courses providing us with feedback on our material and the real Transport Canada exams. All for a cost that is unbeatable.

How long has the online ground school been going?

We've been conducting online ground school since 1999. Tens of thousands of students have graduated and proven our material.

Is this course approved with my flight school?

Whether it is or not is actually irrelevant. Transport Canada approves what flight schools can and can not do. When you have completed this course you go to approved exam center and write the exam. I supply you with all the paperwork and recommendations. Then a flight school would have to be nuts not take you in, as all you need at that point is the flying courses (which is where they make their money). Since 1999 we’ve never had a issue with a flying school not taking the students course and examinations. Flying schools have been very supportive of our online ground school system as the schools would much rather put you into an airplane then teach you ground school (there’s very little money in ground schools as only the larger schools will have enough students to conduct a proper classroom ground school). One exception might be a college program where the courses have to be completed for college credit and Transport Canada credit. Even in these cases we’ve had many students who are using our course material for extra preparation.

How are the courses structured and what is included?

When designing our courses we use the following rationale.

Flexibility:
The courses are designed to help you learn in the style that works best for you. All courses include preparation for both the written examination, and the flight test. We give more content in different formats, giving you more options to learn the material. For example:

Presentations:
"To the point" presentations on what you must know for the exam as required by Transport Canada's written test guides. We also discuss the what, why, where, and how of the topic. We want you to not just know the material, but help develop the wisdom to keep you safe in real world flight operations.

Ground School Videos:
Provides a detailed explanation, often including several different perspectives. Watching all of the videos is not mandatory but suggested, especially if you are having difficulty with a topic. Aaron is our main ground school instructor and he is a fantastic teacher...with an interesting sense of humor!

In flight video:
We have video lessons from the very first discovery flight, all the way up to the multi engine instrument rating lessons. We believe that showing you what the exercise looks like will make you much better prepared. This will save you money and time. Instead of briefings taking 45 mins, you'll be ready in minutes, and you'll feel better because you know what to expect. Your instructor will like flying with you, because you are more prepared.

MP3 Audio:
Listen to ground school when you are driving/walking/running/whatever. Take ground school with you, not you to ground school. Make good use of your time.

Practice quizzes:
Hundreds of quizzes to practice with each course. All have detailed feedback and explanations to help you really understand the topic.

Flash cards:
Practice the material in a rapid fire technique.

IOS and Android App:
Take our multimedia material "on the road" Watch and listen to our content offline by downloading the material ahead of time.

Practice exams:
Realistic practice examinations based on feedback from previous students who have completed the exams.
